The other day I asked for feedback on whether
to use the name AJAX to refer to
JavaScript applications that use XMLHttpRequest (or something like it) to create a rich UI or bring instant updates to
a page. The response was very entertaining! It's the first post here to reach 20 comments. Who knew I even had 20
readers?
Here's a tally of the votes I received for the various potential names. (If you said something positive about a name,
I counted it as a vote, so some comments counted as more than one vote.)
-
Ajax … 3
-
Remote Scripting … 6
-
CADEX ... 2
-
XMLHttpRequest … 1
Clearly, there's some reluctance to slap a catchy term like "Ajax" onto this technology at this point. I was also surprised at how many comments suggested their own alternate name for the technology. There were many creative suggestions:
-
AXES
-
AIRES
-
RISE
-
XHR (short for XMLHttpRequest)
-
jsRIA (JavaScript Rich Internet Application)
-
Single Page Interface
-
RIJEL
-
JAXAS
-
Live Updating
-
Bob
-
Fred
Thanks to everyone who voted or commented! After careful consideration of the voting and the alternate names, I've decided I'm going to avoid the term "Ajax" unless I'm linking to an article that uses that name, and I'm going to refer to the technology in general as "Fred".
Er, I mean "Remote Scripting".

1. Thank you. Now please get slashdotted somehow. :)
